You can start using Treefarmer by clicking on the upper middle search box and beginning to enter your street or road address. You will be offered a list of possible addresses as you add more detail. Select your address from the list and Treefarmer will navigate to your property. Then choose an option to examine “Planting Trees” or “Tree Harvesting”. Next select “Draw Woodlot Boundary” to define a woodlot boundary by clicking around the boundary in a series of steps. For Planting define the current vegetation cover by clicking the arrows in the box that has “Pasture” and select the dominant vegetation cover on your planting site. Then click the + sign to the right and enter in the box the percentage of area with that vegetation type. Click the arrows again to repeat the process and add another vegetation cover. The % cover inputs need to add to 100%. Below that, select the species, tending options, and harvest age. For Tree Harvesting you will need to Draw the Woodlot Boundary (as above) if you haven’t started in Tree Planting. In addition, add access roads for trucks (by clicking along the route), and skid locations. Treefarmer will help you determine the woodlot area, establishment costs, and potential yields. At harvest it will estimate roading, harvesting and transport costs based on terrain and location information. If you wish to calculate a Net return click the box adjacent to item 6, click on “Config” and select species of interest. This will activate options you can set for Tending, Harvest age, Merchantable Conversion factor, log grade % and long price. Much more detail instructions are available in the User Manual or Tutorial.
